The Brisbane central business district (CBD) stands on the original settlement and is situated inside a bend of the Brisbane River, approximately 23km from its mouth at Moreton Bay. The metropolitan area extends in all directions along the floodplain of the Brisbane River valley between the bay and the Great Dividing Range.
Brisbane experiences a humid subtropical climate with warm and moist summers and relatively dry and warm winters. However, thunderstorms and torrential rainfall are very common during the months of November to March. In a summer day, the temperature may rise up to 30 degrees Celsius and in a winter day, it may fall down to 10 degrees Celsius.
